Travel Ophthalmic Technician – Outpatient Ophthalmology Clinic in Oakland, California
Join an on-site ophthalmology team as a Travel Ophthalmic Technician in Oakland, California. In this 13-week outpatient healthcare assignment, you will support adult and geriatric patients while assisting ophthalmologists with comprehensive eye exams, diagnostic testing, patient education, and exam preparation. Build specialized clinical experience in a high-volume eye care clinic with approximately 40 visits per day and six clinic rooms.

- Assignment Duration: 13 weeks, ending February 1, 2027
- Schedule: Five 8-hour shifts per week
- Shift: Days, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
- Hours: 40 hours per week
- Patient Population: Adults and geriatric patients
- Orientation: 40 hours, including guided training with experienced ophthalmic staff

Ophthalmic Technician Job Requirements
- At least 1 year of ophthalmic technician or ophthalmic assistant experience
- Valid California license, as applicable and required for assignment compliance
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- COVID-19 vaccination required; approved medical or religious exemptions may be considered
- Experience in an adult outpatient clinic or physician office preferred
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification preferred
- Epic electronic health record experience preferred
- Ability to support a high-volume ophthalmology clinic and work effectively with physicians, patients, and technical staff
Ophthalmic Technician Responsibilities
- Obtain and document patient histories, medications, allergies, vital signs, and preliminary findings
- Prepare patients for ophthalmic examinations, procedures, and surgeries
- Perform visual acuity, color vision, near and distance vision, refraction, lensometry, keratometry, and tonometry testing
- Conduct visual field testing using Humphrey visual field equipment
- Perform autorefraction, optical biometry, ultrasound biometry, corneal topography, Pentacam, and related ophthalmic diagnostic testing
- Complete retinal OCT, fundus photography, external photography, and other diagnostic imaging exams
- Assist with slit-lamp examinations, fluorescein testing, Schirmer tear testing, ocular motility assessments, and basic eye examinations
- Prepare and administer ophthalmic drops as ordered and provide education regarding ocular medications and contact lens care
- Assist ophthalmologists during examinations, injections, minor procedures, and cataract-related care as directed
- Inform physicians of preliminary findings and identify potential equipment issues or patient concerns
- Maintain, calibrate, clean, and sterilize ophthalmic instruments and equipment
- Document care accurately, prepare charts, label specimens and medications, and follow universal precautions
- Provide clear discharge instructions and patient education while delivering compassionate, professional service
