Job Requirements & Qualifications

  • Active Respiratory Therapist license in Ohio (state licensure required)
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential
  • At least 1 year of recent pediatric hospital respiratory therapy experience (PICU/NICU or pediatric cardiac preferred)
  • Required onboarding documentation: MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, Fit Test, Physical/Health Statement, Ohio Fingerprints, Education & Employment Verification, Skills Checklist, Driver's License/State ID, 2-Step PPD or IGRA, Badge Photo, Criminal Background Check, OIG Search, SAM/EPLS/GSA/OFAC, Drug Screen, Module Completion Certificate
  • Strong ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including attending physicians, fellows, APPs, PAs, NPs, hospitalists, residents, nursing, and other disciplines
  • Preferred certifications: PALS, NRP, or advanced neonatal/pediatric ventilator training (preferred but not required)

Primary Responsibilities — Pediatric Respiratory Care

  • Deliver expert pediatric and neonatal respiratory care across critical care and general units (PICU, NICU, pediatric cardiac ICU, ER)
  • Perform airway management and tracheostomy care including suctioning, manual ventilation, ventilator checks, CPAP/BiPAP/NIMV, and NAVA initiation/management
  • Assist with high-risk deliveries and neonatal resuscitation protocols (surfactant administration, NRP, T-piece ventilation, intubation)
  • Provide and monitor medicated aerosol therapy (SVNs, vibrating mesh nebulizers, MDI/DPI with holding chamber), pentamidine administration, medication cart/Omnicell workflows, and barcode medication administration
  • Conduct blood gas sampling, analysis, and interpretation to guide ventilator management and clinical decision-making
  • Deliver airway clearance therapies (clapping, vibration, directed cough, PEP, oscillatory PEP, HFCC/HFCWO, IPV, cough assist) and hyperinflation techniques
  • Follow clinical practice guidelines and care paths (Asthma Care Path, CF care, RDS management, BPD prevention, Acute Chest Syndrome Carepath, HFNC protocols, Nitric Oxide protocol, Respiratory Care Consult Service)
  • Educate patients and families on respiratory therapies, equipment, and discharge plans

Technical Skills, Monitoring & Transport

  • Monitor respiratory status: pulse oximetry, peak flow, capnography, ventilator graphics, transcutaneous CO2, overnight/continuous oximetry and capnography studies, and spontaneous breathing trials
  • Administer oxygen and special gas therapies including high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), oxygen blenders/analyzers, inhaled nitric oxide (calibration/troubleshooting), sub-ambient oxygen and Heliox therapy
  • Support patient transport with portable HFNC units, T-piece ventilation, MRI/intramural transport with assisted ventilation, neonatal rapid response, and nitric oxide transport
  • Maintain, clean, troubleshoot and perform preventative care on respiratory equipment and ventilators
