Join a high-volume post-surgical medical-surgical telemetry unit in Chesapeake, Virginia. This 13-week travel nursing assignment offers the opportunity to care for adult and geriatric patients in a collaborative hospital setting, with a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:7. Located in Coastal Virginia, Chesapeake provides easy access to Virginia Beach and Norfolk, along with scenic hiking trails and more than 20 waterways for outdoor recreation.

• Shift: 12-hour nights, approximately 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
• Schedule: Typically 3 shifts per week; 4-shift schedules may also be available based on unit needs
• Hours: Approximately 36 hours per week
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend during the assignment
• Holiday Requirement: Travelers must work two of the three winter holidays that fall within the contract
• Orientation: Approximately 24 hours, including required pre-start modules

Medical-Surgical Telemetry RN Job Requirements

• At least 2 years of recent, relevant medical-surgical telemetry nursing experience
• Active Virginia or Compact Registered Nurse license in hand at the time of submission
• Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association
• Current ACLS certification
• Recent experience with Epic electronic health records
• Demonstrated ability to safely manage a typical 1:7 patient ratio
• Strong telemetry interpretation skills, including rhythm identification and interval measurements
• Successful completion of the required telemetry assessment with a score of at least 80%; one attempt is provided
• Must be comfortable working nights, weekends, holidays, and in a floating or shared-scheduling environment as needed
• Permanent residence must be at least 50 miles from the assignment location for travel nursing consideration
• Current influenza vaccination is required; permitted medical or religious exemptions and declinations may be considered

Travel Nurse Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric patients recovering from surgical procedures
• Care for patients with urologic and GYN surgical diagnoses in a high-volume post-surgical setting
• Monitor cardiac rhythms through bedside and remote telemetry systems and promptly identify changes in patient condition
• Manage continuous bladder irrigation, surgical drains, wound care, and wound vac therapy
• Administer medications and treatments, including heparin protocols, IV insulin protocols, PCA therapy, and oxygen therapy
• Perform peripheral and central line care, PICC line management, blood product administration, and IV initiation and maintenance
• Provide tracheostomy, feeding tube, renal failure, isolation precaution, and other specialized patient care as indicated
• Collaborate with rapid response teams, respiratory services, pharmacy, physical therapy, IV teams, radiology, social services, and other interdisciplinary partners
• Document patient care accurately in Epic and communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team
• Recognize clinical deterioration and activate appropriate rapid response or emergency interventions
